The Layers of Summer

Summer is just around the corner, and to me, it’s quite literally the most wonderful time of the year. Anything below 70 degrees feels like winter to me. I absolutely adore the feeling of warm sunlight nourishing my body, giving my skin that gorgeous golden bronze glow as the season progresses. The 9:00 p.m. sunsets are pure magic. But, as always, I’m here for the food.

Now, autumn is my culinary Olympics. I prepare months in advance for holiday meals and special gatherings, doing my very best work in the kitchen. Summer, on the other hand, is more of my off-season. Not that I slack off – the flavor palette and dishes just take on a much simpler tone. Think seasonal fruits, fresh veggies, Thai salads, and, of course, grilling. These are foods that don’t require a lot of effort yet deliver intense flavors.

There is one aspect of the culinary spectrum that doesn’t get the attention it deserves: the libations. The summer drink menu is an outdoor dining staple, ranging from iced to blended, from crisp to creamy.

We have warmth, longer days, good food, and delectable drinks, all topped with a laid-back vibe. With three children, each involved in different sports and academic activities, September through May feels like an endless merry-go-round. So, I embrace the nothing-to-do list that comes with June through August. I cherish family road trips to Chelan, enjoy peaceful walks to the local coffee shop overlooking the Sound, and never shy away from hosting the grandest of backyard barbecues. Very Bridgerton of me, wouldn’t you say?

But when it’s all said and done, my go-to is the comfort of my very own couch, root beer float in hand, with not a care in the world. So, cheers to the sun-soaked days ahead, and may they find you well.
