  • Dear Spring,

    Dear Spring,

I must admit, you are not my favorite of the seasons.

While cold weather doesn’t particularly tickle my fancy, the embrace of a cozy fireside art session offers a welcoming retreat from the biting winds. Winter, for all her stubbornness, at least knows how to commit to the mood.

So what is it about your temperate equinox that leaves me less than enthused?

The short answer is that you can feel a bit underwhelming.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, spring is nearly winter’s Irish twin. We wait with eager expectation for you to grace our grand evergreens with your presence, only to be met with days of gloomy sunbreaks and evenings that are damp and uninviting. You arrive quietly, almost shyly, as if unsure whether you should stay.

And yet, we take what we are given.

Because beneath the gray skies and lingering chill, something important is happening. The earth is resting and gathering itself, preparing quietly for the work ahead. Roots stretch deeper. Buds form with patience. The soil, still cool, holds the promise of what summer will soon ask it to deliver.

Spring, in all your subtlety, are the season that prepares the way.

When summer finally opens her arms, we will be enveloped in the fullness of her generosity—a harvest of color, warmth, and abundance made possible by you, dear spring.

So while you may not be my favorite, I have come to appreciate your quiet work behind the scenes.

After all, every beautiful table begins with preparation.

    — Michelle

At The Table is a seasonal editorial filled with recipes and simple gathering tips. In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing recipes that feel fresh and unfussy, dishes meant for longer evenings, open windows, and tables that welcome both planned dinners and the occasional unexpected guest.

It feels only right to begin the season with a bright baked salmon salad, a meal that captures the quiet shift from winter to spring.

  • Chaos to Clarity

    Chaos to Clarity

Is anyone else out there caught in a whirlwind of relentless determination? Let me share my journey with you. I found myself in quite the entrepreneurial slump, my mind inundated with ideas pouring in like a tsunami. Some nights, I couldn’t sleep until I’d jotted down every brilliant thought, only to find myself awake moments later, struck by even more dazzling inspiration. This is where my little conundrum began.

You see, I was overflowing with passion and energy, yet I couldn’t quite figure out how to turn these magnificent ideas into action, and those actions into sales. I was utterly stuck. It was baffling, really. Why was it so challenging to do what I seemingly loved to do? I adore crafting content, whipping up culinary delights in the kitchen, and baking scrumptious creations. All these marvelous ideas swirled in my mind, but they remained trapped on paper as little more than random notes. It was frustrating; I began to wonder if I might have adult ADHD because I simply couldn’t connect the dots from start to finish. There was a vast gap, and I couldn’t fathom how to construct the bridge.

Then, one day, I made a life-altering decision. I decided to stop the struggle. I had sought advice, collected tips, and sought inspiration everywhere I could. But the missing piece was allowing myself to step back, to take a breather, to detach from the hustle and bustle of my business and personal life. I needed that moment of solitude to gather my thoughts, to let them sink into my brain, my body, and my spirit, and to discern the way forward.

I can’t quite put my finger on what I realized during that time, but it provided the opportunity to just breathe, to prioritize what truly mattered, to tackle it, and then return to the other tasks. Prioritize, complete, and repeat. It started to flow naturally, without any forced effort. You see, trying too hard was part of my problem; it made everything feel artificial, far from genuine. The most significant realization for me was to reintroduce myself, Michelle Vine Walters, to every single endeavor. I needed to be wholly present and genuine in everything I did.

Now, I feel like I’m emerging from that “push through” phase. I’m still within it, but I can see the triumph waiting at the end of the trials. Everything is starting to fit together seamlessly, and I’m no longer stuck in that stagnant place. My brain processes things at a natural pace, and it feels like I’m pulling everything together.

I’m deeply grateful for this period, as I know that when I eventually conquer this challenging phase, I’ll look back and appreciate the growth it brought. It will make everything I’m currently experiencing all the more meaningful. So, if you find yourself deep in your own “push through” phase, keep going. Whether you want to call it labor pains or trials, what you are birthing will be extraordinary and astonishing. When you look back, you’ll marvel at how you made it through, and it will all be worth it.

  • Summer Girl

    Summer Girl

I’m a summer enthusiast through and through – those long, sun-drenched days, the warmth in the air, and the delicious food sizzling on the grill. There’s truly nothing quite like a southern cookout on a sunkissed Sunday afternoon bathed in golden light.

But, you know what? Autumn is growing on me, and it’s not just because I happened to be born in October. There’s an enchanting sense of renewal that permeates the atmosphere during this time of year. While most people tend to associate spring with rejuvenation, I believe that fall holds the true magic of fresh beginnings. It’s a season when even the trees gracefully shed the old to prepare for the beauty of what’s to come.

If I were to put it into words, I’d say autumn casts a spell of connection. The weather cools down, and we find ourselves gravitating towards cozy indoor spaces. I fondly recall my younger days and more recent ones when the latest fall season episodes would grace our television screens. I’m not quite sure how it looks nowadays with all the changes, but it’s still the perfect time to indulge in some Netflix binge-watching, engage in lively board games, and, most importantly, spend quality time with your family and loved ones.

This is the season to create those warm, inviting spaces and craft unforgettable moments. As I look ahead to this fall, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. My children are growing up fast, and time seems to be slipping through my fingers. This season, I’ve decided to get back to the basics, to slow down a little, and to savor life’s simple pleasures. After all, it’s the little moments that make life truly wonderful.
