I found this blog post I wrote quite some time ago. While I have learned so much since launching my business in 2015, I believe the basics still apply. If you’re looking to start a business but don’t have the finances to go all in, take a read below. You may find a gem or two.
The first thing I did when I started my business was create a website. Yes, I did this 100% free on WordPress. Now a website might not be necessary in the beginning; however, WP is an option if you need an inexpensive fix. Canva also provides free websites. Of course, you will not be able to create custom domains for these websites, but you can always change that once you have some capital.
Next, create, create, create! My business was a baked goods delivery service, so I was constantly posting pics of my treats on social media. I would also publish recipes on my blog. No matter how “cringe” it may be I was willing to shamelessly plug my baked goodies with visual content that showcased their deliciousness and my expertise.
(Note: I was able to cut costs by offering a delivery service. 1) I didn’t have the overhead from a brick-and-mortar. 2) The product was made to order which allowed flexibility with inventory. 3) Orders were paid in full prior to delivery. Of course, there were some trial-and-error moments but overall it was a good model.)
Third, I consistently spoke on my own behalf. In other words, I was always talking about my product. I even baked cakes (for free) for parties and get-togethers. One way or another I was going to let you know you were cheating yourself if ALL your special baked goods didn’t come from my bakery.
Lastly, I kept going. I was told my prices were too high, others just wanted a more “established” bakery. Trust me there were several no thank yous and maybe next time before consistent orders rolled in. Sadly, a lot of the turn-downs were from those who knew me. At times I received more support from people I’d just met through networking. Not gonna lie, I had some resentment toward a few who will remain nameless. No matter the level of frustration, moving forward was always the objective.
That online bakery opened doors I never thought to knock on let alone walk through. But I’m so glad I did. I hope this little post from way back when puts some pep in your step.
