I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you: I’ve recently reignited my passion for baking and am diving back into the delicious world of commercial baking. Allow me to take you on a little journey through my mercantile history and the lessons I’ve learned.

Back in November 2015, I launched a baked goods delivery service, initially catering to friends, family, and referrals. By March 2016, I expanded my services to include online sales, continuing to deliver locally for the next 18 months, and even had the pleasure of fulfilling two out-of-state orders. However, as the business grew, I found myself lacking the bandwidth and know-how to manage it effectively, leading me to retire from online sales while still baking for family and friends.

Fast forward to today, and I can’t help but feel nostalgic for my delectable startup. Although some of the same challenges remain, I’ve gained valuable experience and conducted thorough research, allowing me to approach things differently this time around.

Here are a few key changes I’m implementing:

1. Full Payments Prior to Filling Orders: While I’ve never had issues with non-payment, I have experienced a few last-minute payments. To ensure peace of mind, I now require full payment upfront. This way, I can avoid any potential waste and financial loss from undelivered products.

2. Menu Adherence: My menus are carefully curated with seasonal delights, made from scratch using fresh ingredients. As much as I’d love to accommodate special requests, sticking to my set menu ensures quality and consistency. Additionally, orders must be placed at least three days in advance to guarantee timely delivery.

3. Refined Delivery Logistics: Previously, I would deliver to anyone, even if it meant traveling up to 30 miles. This model is no longer feasible. I’ve now limited my delivery areas to specific neighborhoods, considering permits, mileage costs, refrigeration needs, and, most importantly, safety concerns. It’s crucial to ensure secure and efficient deliveries without compromising on safety.

Running a business means constantly adapting to changing landscapes, and I’m committed to staying diligent and ready to pivot whenever necessary. Reflecting on my first venture, I’m incredibly grateful for the lessons learned and am excited to embark on this next chapter with Elle & Vine Bake Shoppe.

I look forward to delighting local pastry lovers with my creations once again. Thank you for joining me on this journey!
